A 5 Step Staff Motivation and Management Technique

by Andrew Wood

How Easy Would It Be to Manage & Motivate Your Staff if You Knew in Advance How to Approach Every Question Ever Asked Of You!

It’s amazing how many business managers actually field questions from staff on a case by case basis without ever considering that the very way you answer the question either contributes to that person’s ability to grow and learn, or diminishes it! I have used the following motivation tactics at my golf course management company for years with great success! I also use this with my staff members who work on my direct mail marketing book.

Recognize, Reward, Retrain, Reassign or Replace.

Are the conceptual cornerstones of these five “R’s” an easy and beneficial system? Is it a system you share with your staff and can rely on to give you the guidance you need to approach every question you are asked in a way that educates and motivates? I’ll explain each “R” in detail, but first this is why it is so important!

When you answer questions directly, you rob people of a chance to learn and you might even be stealing money from the business who hired you!

It is easy to just answer a question but when you do, the person who asks it stops thinking for his or herself. When you do this, you’re not functioning as a manager. In addition, it is likely the business who hired you is paying you more than the people they hired you to manage, so they expect your presence to positively affect not only the people, but also the decisions these people make.

You’re being paid to contribute to the process. So when you just answer the question on a case-by-case basis, you’re denying your employer the benefit of your experience. Now let me tell you how you can allow your staff to grow, but also give your employer the best of you.

Read the below bullet points for a simple understanding of this powerful system:

The Five “R’s”…

The first 2 “R’s” affect staff motivation, the last 3 “R’s” management.

Recognize: As people often do, they will come to you to tell you something good they did. It is easy to overlook that they may be looking for positive reinforcement or feedback. Whenever you’re presented with the opportunity, “recognize” the effort. When what they did wasn’t positive, recognize that as well. When you listen carefully to what people say and respond in a way that recognizes what they are trying to communicate, even if you need to correct it, “Recognizing” then means you’re interested and that is always positive.

Reward: Reward actually goes with the “recognition” they receive above, but only when their actions were positive. Rewards can be very big or very small.

Retrain: Approach a person’s lack of ability to do what was asked of them as a training issue. Don’t personalize; just present solutions to solve the problem. Even if you suspect that a person has the ability to do the job but attitude is the problem that too is a training issue. Some people need personal training improvement just as much as learning the technical aspects of the job.

Reassign: When it becomes clear an individual cannot get the job done, but they are a good asset to the club, then simply look for an opportunity to reassign them to a job or project that will provide them a better chance to perform to expectations.

Replace: In most cases, you’re doing a person a favor when you let them go. People need to strive to find a place where they can be at their best. It is natural for all humans to be happy when they know they are doing what they are meant to do and are doing their very best. Sometimes you’re going to find that retraining a person is not going to work and you would not or cannot reassign them. After applying the previous four “R’s” to this relationship, the last step, if expectations are not met, is to replace the individual. The good news is that if you have been applying the previews four “R’s” it should be amicable.

The Best Way to Identify and Develop Leaders

by Leigh Branham

Leadership is a critical issue for every organization because every organization needs leaders, and because leaders have potential for creating great harm or great good.

And yet, according to a recent Conference Board study, only a third of corporate officers believe their companies have the leaders they need to successfully pursue business opportunities. About the same percentage say they are effective at identifying future leaders.

On top of this unsettling news, we must also face up to the looming demographic situation by the year 2010 the 35-to-44 age group from which most organizations typically select their leaders will decline 18 percent.

And there’s one more thing we cannot ignore the reality that leadership in 2003 has become even more challenging with the constant acceleration of the pace of change, superheated competition, heightened pressure from boards and financial markets, the impending return of the war for talent, and rising generations of workers who require more flexible and involving leadership styles.

Tomorrow’s leaders will not only need to be visionary strategic thinkers, quick decision-makers, skilled team builders and great communicators, they will also need to bring a new mind-set about finding and keeping the right talent.

So the question is: What is your organization doing to identify and accelerate the development of the leaders who will take the reins when the boomer leaders begin to retire?

Begin by defining the leadership competencies you will need to achieve results. Remember that different organizations require different leadership strengths at different times in their evolution.

Instead of just asking managers to subjectively identify future leaders, conduct formal assessments of leader candidates against the leadership competencies you have identified. FedEx requires all internal candidates for managerial positions to participate in what the company calls LEAP or Leadership Education and Assessment Program. Participation spend one day completing a battery of assessments and interviews, and another day listening to current managers discuss the day-to-day challenges of leadership. The company considers the resulting 20 percent dropout rate a positive outcome.

Instead of just doing traditional succession planning by identifying potential replacements for all leadership positions, progressive companies now create customized development plans based on a broader view of forecasted talent needs. This new ‘acceleration pool’ concept, which prepares future leaders for a higher level rather than just a specific job, represents a health adaptation to the fact that only about a third of mangers ever move into the positions for which they were slotted.

More companies are recognizing that leaders develop faster through challenging on-the-job experiences, or ’stretch’ assignments, than through classroom training. The risk of failure in these assignments requires that considerable thought be invested in selecting the right assessment for each individual. It is also important not to rotate future leaders too quickly, as they need to stay long enough in the assignment to truly learn and develop.

Because some leadership candidates lose interest in seeking higher levels, and you may have overlooked a late bloomer or two, it is wise to reassess at regular intervals those you have identified as emerging leaders.

Not All Calories Are Created Equal.

by Ivan Girevoy

Calories, do you really understand its meaning? Most people still do not know what a calorie is. When asked about its meaning, most people would link it to dieting. However there is far more to calories than just a word that is linked to weight loss. Lets see if we can explain it a little better.

Understanding Calories

Ok…here goes… “calorie is a unit of heat equal to the amount of heat required to raise the temperature of one kilogram of water by one degree at one atmosphere pressure; used by nutritionists to characterize the energy-producing potential in food.” This is how it is defined as per Wikipedia. What they do not tell you is that there are different types of calories.

The main types of calories include: carbohydrates, fats and proteins. All of them burn when used in the body and then turn into heat energy, which is generally called calories.

Each type of calorie varies in terms of chemical and physical properties. Here are the essential things that you need to know about each calorie type.

The Fear Of Carbohydrates

Carbohydrates are the most common type of calorie. It is found on foods that are rich on starch and sugar. Most of them can be taken from plant-based foods like vegetables, fruits, and grains. Legumes, such as lentils, beans, and peas, are also rich with carbs. However, dairy products would be the only foods that come from animals which have a lot of carb content.

Typically carbohydrates can be classified into two subdivisions: simple and complex.

Simple carbs are normally sugars, such as glucose and fructose, which come from fruits and a few vegetables. Another type would be lactose, which comes from milk. Last would be sucrose, which comes from cane sugar. (Rule of thumb is any thing that ends in “ose” is a type of sugar.)

Sugar that is for everyday use is pure sucrose. A lot of simple carbs that you eat are sugars that are mixed with processed foods such as cookies, sodas etc. These add-ons are the major reason why sugar accounts for 16% of total calories that are consumed by Americans according to most health surveys.

The complex types are chains or series of simple carbs, which primarily consist of starches along with fiber, which can be found in all foods that come from plants. However, plants store carbohydrates in the form of starch. Foods that have high complex carbs would include grains and products that come from it like bread and pasta. Also, potatoes, beans, corn, and other vegetables are also high in complex carbs.

Shadowed Proteins

Since carbohydrates seem to be the most popular type of calorie, proteins on the other hand seem to be the most over shadowed in comparison with the fame of fats and carbs. However, it is an important kind of calorie that you’ll need to develop body muscle.

Proteins have about 4 kilocalories per gram. Majority of this kind of calorie can not be naturally produced by the human body and must originate from dietary sources. The main sources of protein include: eggs, nuts, meats, legumes, grains, dairy products. (And yes some of these are also those nasty carb carriers.)

Recent studies suggest, men between ages 19 to 70 should consume 56g of protein everyday in order to avoid deficiency. On the other hand, women within the same age range should get at least 46g/day. Those people, such as certain athletes consume more protein then average in order to increase muscle mass.

Fats

Fats, would probably be the most unwanted kind of calorie by many. However, it still plays an important role in the normal function of the body. The body cannot absorb Vitamins A, E, D and K if not for it. They play an important role in the maintenance of healthy hair and skin. Protection is another function, since they protect various organs from shock. They are insulators, which is very important especially for people that live in colder climates.

Animals and plants both contain types of fats. Types of animal fats would include lard, butter and fish oil, while plant fats would include soy beans, peanuts, sunflower seeds, olives, coconuts, sesames, and vegetable and seed oils.

Police Test Practice

by Nick Dylann Andrews

If your goal is to become a police officer then you must first enter the recruitment process and pass this process before you will be offered a place of employment. If you do not complete the process or you fail one stage you will have to re apply and this can be a lengthy process.

Being a police officer is about making a difference to your community and doing a job that you really want to do. So many people end up getting a job that they do not enjoy and spend the next 30 years looking back and wondering what if.

The job of a police officer is one of the most competitive around. As with all jobs of this nature there is a difficult and tricky application process which can often put candidates off from applying in the first place.

By preparing yourself and working hard at each stage of the process you will keep yourself focused on that particular stage. Remember dont try to focus on the entire process this can be off putting and overwhelming.

Once through the application form stage you will be asked to attend an assessment centre, it is here you will be tested in a variety of ways, for example with interactive role plays and interviews. Your reasoning, writing and numerical skills will be put to the test by a number of police written exercises.

Candidates often find this stage difficult because they are not used to answering these type of questions. While they may have experienced a role play or interview in their life many have not experienced psychometric testing in this way. This test measures your suitability to the role and you need to pass them if you want to carry on through the process.

The vast majority of candidates turn up to the assessment centre and just hope that they will pass the police tests. While a small select few will take the time beforehand to practice these types of questions which will significantly increase their chances of success.

By taking the time to practise these questions you will find the police tests much easier on the day. Imagine seeing these types of questions for the first time in the actual exam, would you start to panic? Some candidates do, whereas by preparing for this stage you will have already experienced the questions.

In the UK, the numerical reasoning test takes place on the assessment day and lasts for around 12 minutes during which time you will need to answer 25 questions. These are all multiple choice questions. You will be given a total of 5 answers and you must select the correct one.

Strength Training And Its Benefits.

by Ivan Girevoy

Strength training is an important element of fitness and exercise. If you are trying to lose weight then it is essential that you incorporate some strength training activities into your routine. Losing weight is about burning calories. It is about burning fat and one way to do that is to build your muscles. Basically the more muscle you develop the more energy you burn, resulting in greater weight loss.

Strength training does not have to be a daily grind of lifting weights in the gym. There are many classes or exercise programs you can follow that will help with building your muscles. Most gyms have classes like total body fitness or group power lifting. Typically these types of classes use many types of weight training equipment including barbells, hand weights and resistance bands. The typical class lasts for about an hour.

Over all it seems to be women seem to enjoy these types of strength training classes more than men. Men typically enjoy working out the muscle groups by adding bulk. Strength training classes help to shape and tone your muscles into lean mass without the bulk. In addition, since the instructor pushes you along during the class at a very rapid pace, there is a bit of cardiovascular benefit as well. A final note about going to an instructor lead strength training class: they can ensure that you are doing the exercises with the correct form to help you avoid injury.

So you do not care for classes. Thats ok, there are many exercises that you can do from home using just simple hand weights will do just fine, and there are many strength exercises that require no equipment like the simple pushup. Find a DVD to follow along to help you with your exercise. A good program to follow will help keep you on track, motivated and more likely to do the exercises correctly without injuring yourself.

Many people go to the gym to lift weights. Typical regimens include alternating days of upper body work with lower body work. For example, on Monday and Thursday you might work your upper body, while on Tuesday and Friday you might work your lower body. This gives the muscles time to repair and grow between workouts. Most weight lifting programs involve lifting in sets. For instance you might do three sets of ten repetitions of the exercise of your choice that has a focus on the target are you wish to improve on.

Why Company Social Events Are Important

by Helga Adams

Social events are quite helpful in the efficient functioning of a company. These events have a lot of benefits, and if you do not organize them, then you are not encouraging your staff to work to the best of their abilities.

Team building is usually the main function of these events. They provide a great opportunity where people can socialize with their managers as well as their co workers in an informal setting. They encourage employees to get to know each other personally and develop a lasting social bond, which extends beyond their official relationship. By developing the understanding among team members, these events improve the efficacy of the team, and thereby increase the efficiency of the organization.

Corporate social events can also be utilized to pick out the best performers of the organization and reward them accordingly. Recognition given by the company ensures that the performance level is maintained by employees, and it helps to motivate other employees as well.

These events also generate visibility of employees to senior executives. While earlier the senior managers might have had just a vague idea about who the workers are, a personal meeting along with lively conversations about the matter at hand by the employees can leave a positive and lasting impression on them.

Lastly, these social events act as a break from the drudgery of everyday work. They can relax by participating in all the various activities that take place in such an event, or by merely having a conversation with guests attending the event. This makes them feel refreshed and return to work with a reinvigorated frame of mind.

Given the importance of social events for a company, it is crucial that you use a good events company for the management of the event. These events companies are experts at managing the logistics, and use their many years of experience in this field to devise brilliant ideas that make sure that your event is successful.
